Budapest is the jewel in Hungary's crown and the best place to start your trip

Hungary in 2-3 days

Explore the wonders of Budapest taking in both sides of the Danube — from the stunning Buda to the hip Pest. Visit the Parliament building and the astonishing Great Synagogue before spending an afternoon at one of the city's curative thermal spas.

In 7-9 days

After a couple of days exploring Budapest, head south west by train to Lake Balaton. See the lovely Balatonfured and sample its "sour water" before moving onto  Tihany Abbey and then trying out the unique thermal Heviz Lake, which is said to have medicinal properties. Then it's off to Pecs - the capital of the Transdanubia region and a fabulous art town which is considered as THE must see Hungarian site after Budapest because of its fine museums and monuments.

Two weeks +

After a couple of days in Pecs, go south to Villany — one of Hungary's most successful wine regions and best places to sample red wine. Next head north to Eger, Hungary's most beautiful baroque town with a lovely relaxed feel.
